How old do you have to be to buy ammunition?

For Illinois residents you may purchase rifle ammunition with a FOID card at age 18 but not handgun ammunition. At age 21 you may purchase rifle or handgun ammunition with a FOID card

Do I need a gun license to buy ammo?

Illinois residents need a FOID card in order to purchase ammunition. Out of state residents may purchase ammunition with a driver’s license or state ID. See further guidelines based on age below.

Guidelines for Purchasing Ammunition Based on Age and Residency

Under Age 18: A parent or guardian may purchase the ammunition for an individual under age 18. Illinois parents must have a FOID card. Out of state parents need a drivers’ license or state ID.

Age 18 – 21: For Illinois residents, you may purchase rifle ammunition with a FOID card but not handgun ammunition. Customers out of state who are age 18 through 20 may buy ammunition with a driver’s license or state ID.

Over Age 21: With a FOID card you may purchase rifle or handgun ammunition. Without a FOID card you may not purchase ammunition. Out of state residents may purchase ammunition with a driver’s license or state ID.

Non-Immigrant Alien: NO

Guidelines for Purchasing Firearms Based on Age and Residency

Under Age 18: A parent or legal guardian may purchase a firearm in their name if their child is under 18. The Parent must have a FOID card and a driver’s license or state ID. Out of state parents need a driver’s license or proper state ID

Age 18 – 21: In order to purchase a rifle you must be 18 and older with a valid FOID card. Out of State people MUST have a driver’s license or state ID.

Over Age 21: Illinois residents may purchase rifles or handguns with a FOID card and driver’s license. Out of state residents need a driver’s license or state ID.

Non-Immigrant Alien: NO

 

Using The Shooting Range

 

Guidelines for Using the Shooting Range Based on Age and Residency

Can I use the shooting range without a FOID card?

You may use the shooting range without a FOID card if you are accompanied by a person with a FOID card. You can also shoot on the range if you are an out of state person as long as you have a Driver’s License or State ID. Please read below for the full guidelines based on age and residency.

Under Age 18: May use the range with a parent or guardian. The parent from Illinois must have a FOID card. If out of state they must have a driver’s license or state ID.

Age 18 – 21: May use the range by themselves with a rifle only and understand all safety rules with a FOID card. Without a FOID card, you must be with a person with a FOID card or an out of state person with a Driver’s License or State ID.

Over Age 21: Illinois residence needs a FOID card to shoot by themselves on the range. Out of state residents only need a driver’s license or state ID. Without a FOID card, Illinois residents may shoot in the same lane with another FOID cardholder or an Illinois residence may shoot with an out of state person with a driver’s license or state ID.

Non-Immigrant Alien: May shoot with a passport or driver’s license & can understand English.

 

Rental of Firearms

Guidelines for Renting Firearms Based on Age and Residency

Under Age 18: A parent or guardian may rent and shoot with the child. Parents of children must have a FOID card if they live in Illinois. Out of state people under 18 need to be with their parents who have a driver’s license or state ID.

Age 18 – 21: You may rent a rifle with a FOID card but not a handgun. If you don’t have a FOID card, you must be with a person who has a FOID card or a person from out of state with a Driver’s License.

Over Age 21: Illinois residents may rent rifles or hand guns with a FOID card. Without a FOID card, they may rent under a person who does have a FOID from Illinois or an out of state person with a driver’s license or state ID.

Non-Immigrant Alien: May rent with a passport or driver’s license & can understand English
